Getting to Ensenada

Ensenada is a coastal city in Baja California, Mexico, approximately south of Tijuana along the Pacific corridor. The most common arrival routes use TIJ (Tijuana) or SAN (San Diego), with MXL (Mexicali) as an alternative if needed.

Airports (recommended options)
1. TIJ — Tijuana International Airport (Mexico)
-
Often the most direct route to Ensenada by road.
-
Typical road travel time from TIJ to Ensenada is about 1.5–2.5 hours, depending on traffic.

2. SAN — San Diego International Airport (USA)
-
Suitable for international connections; continue to Ensenada by rental car or cross-border transport.
-
Typical drive time from SAN to Ensenada is about 2.5–3.5 hours, depending on border crossing conditions and traffic.

3. MXL — Mexicali International Airport (Mexico)
-
A good alternative when flights to TIJ are limited.
-
Expect a longer ground transfer (commonly 4+ hours) by car.

Cross-border option: CBX (Cross Border Xpress)
If you fly into TIJ, CBX allows ticketed passengers to cross between San Diego (Otay Mesa) and the Tijuana airport terminal via a pedestrian bridge.

Border crossing guidance (SAN route)
-
Carry a passport valid for your travel dates and comply with entry requirements for both the USA (if transiting) and Mexico.
-
Many visitors entering Mexico as tourists receive an entry authorization (often referred to as an FMM process). Rules depend on nationality and travel mode; check official guidance before departure.
-
Border wait times can vary widely; build buffer time into your itinerary, especially on arrival day. It is much faster to cross from USA to México, than from México to USA.

Ground transport to Ensenada
Bus / coach
-
Scheduled coach services operate along the Tijuana–Ensenada corridor; fares and timetables vary by provider and season. Practical advice: If arriving at TIJ airport, there is a bus terminal nearby (5 minute walk), and buses to Ensenada leave every hour or two hours depending on the season. This bus will take you to the bus terminal close to downtown.

Shuttle / private transfer
-
Private transfers are widely available and can be cost-effective for groups (3–6 people). You can find this service outside the airport, and will take you straight to your hotel in Ensenada.
-
If you plan to attend the social excursion, you may prefer not to drive yourself.

Rental car
-
Renting a car is convenient for flexibility (especially for Valle de Guadalupe visits), but parking and city traffic should be considered.
-
If you drive from SAN, confirm rental terms for crossing into Mexico.

Local mobility in Ensenada
-
Taxis are common; agree on the fare (or ensure meter use) before departure where possible.
-
App-based ride services may operate in the area; availability can vary by time and location. Uber and DiDi are the most common services.
